Zionic's site

Zionic's site, know colloquially as Server Down Central, launched on November 15th, 1998 as a fun alternative activity for players when the server crashed. The Tibia server was repeatedly down for large amounts of time, so the site became a popular respite. It was so popular that CIP even made jokes about improving their server so 98% off the traffic would no longer need to go to the site.

The site itself contained a tips and tricks for new players section which detailed what to do if you encounter a PK and what a PK might look like. At this time players of level 15 where considered high levels, and most junk chars were no greater than level 6 or 7. Their advice advocated logging out and not engaging PKs whenever possible. Mages of even low levels were considered extremely dangerous at the time.

Zionic was a graphic's designer and liked to use the site to display some of his suggestions. Out of the list of graphics he proposed, many made it into the game and some even still exist today. The ones we know based on the site are as follows: Salmon, Orb of Spirits, Mind Stone, Life Crystal, Green and Red Gems, Gold Ring, Mastermind and Demon Powered Shield, Knife, Fork, and Spoon set. His other more interesting graphics like the roulette wheel of course never made it in.

The site's main draw was of course the funny jokes about the update progress and jokes in the style of "you know you've been playing Tibia too long when…". If jokes were not your style then you could download the Tibia Simulator, which was a text-based version of Tibia where you could even save your progress. I am not sure on the details of the game as it is lost but it was a much-loved feature, an from what I've read the game had a choose your own adventure feel of picking from multiple choices.

Also listed on the site is Zionic's shop where he offered many different items for sale. Some of our earliest records of items and prices are found in this list. The rares listed have much lower states and eye droppingly cheap pricing compared to today. Unfortunately, only the sorcerer runes and prices are listed as Zionic was a Sorc. You may notice that the pick had question marks beside it, this is because no one at the time knew what it was used for. The unlocking of this mystery would provide many adventures with jaw dropping loot.

Despite all the jokes the site did have some information of the much-anticipated Beta 5 update which was progressing slowly. Originally the update should have been around November of 1998 but was pushed to the first week of April of 1999. As we know the update didn't end up launching until June 1999. The information that could be found on the update was that skills will be relative to the level of the players, which hopefully would eliminate powergaming. Also, there would apparently be plenty of new spells for the mages, and at the same time paladins will get less magic (a good thing because of how overpowered they were viewed at this time). New monsters were also planned and an expanded map. This update page also included a dead link to the new map, but I was able to follow the trail and find an incredible map of CIPs plans for the new area. This map is discussed in greater detail in the Beta 5 history section.

As all sites eventually go inactive, so too did Zionic's. The last update we have recorded is April 13th, 1999.
