The Riders of the Apocalypse (RoA) were Tibia's first chaotic guild. Founded on July 15th, 1998 by Betrayal, they were centered around the idea of sowing dissident in game to "restore the Balance between Chaos and Order". Their arch enemies were the Stormknights which they considered "good" alignment, and they fought often with other self-styled guilds which labelled themselves as "good". Players and guilds which were neutral were left alone unless they intruded on guild business. The RoA was very big on revenge and it was expected that members retaliate against guild enemies. There was even a small group dedicated to exterminating enemies, called the Hand of Death, which engaged in spying by getting accepted into other enemy guilds.
Interestingly at one point the guild was the first to begin accepting money to kill other players, an important trait that the powerful Mercenarys guild would use. The guild would also extort money from players for protection, and those who paid a monthly unspecified amount, would receive protection for the month. Fed up with people using monsters to train, the Riders would attack and kill people they felt were gaining skill in this way.
To join you had to be at least level 9 and message the leaders for entrance. As was usual you gave up your ability to be a part of other guilds and spying for another guild was severely punished.
Those of the RoA most of all disliked players who killed other PKs and they liked to interfere with any attack that wasn't sanctions by themselves. As you can guess this created a lot of friction between them and the other guard guilds of the time, which eventually turned into an all out fight between them and the community which resulted in their fading from Tibia.
In early April of 1999 Betrayal, the well-known Master of Disaster, PK, and founder of RoA accepted a duel to the death by Gorak and Ingram. The duel would be between Betrayal (level 33, his peak) and Scythe (level 16-19) against Gorak (level 31) and Ingram (level 12-14). Betrayal was well known for using bursts and firebombs to kill his victims but in this fight he choose to go with firebombs and SDs.
This strategy proved to be inferior, and Gorak's victory earned him the ultra rare Chain Legs, of which only two existed in game, which were on Betrayal's corpse. There were no half measures in old Tibia, you played with everything you had, including unique rares. Betrayal was angry at this outcome and proceeded to launch a war against Goraks's guild with his guild the RoA. The resulting war which started on April 5th, 1999 saw many deaths including notable members like Arieswar and friends of RoA such as Sir Warlord who was the highest level in Tibia at the time. In three days both sides had enough, and Betrayal agreed to end the war and remove the random PKs from the RoA and Gorak would return the Chain Legs. This decision would cause the RoA to lose its appeal and the guild faded and closed sometime after May of 1999.
With RoA fading into the background, and a legacy of chaos ruined, it should be no surprise that one other notable event happened with Betrayal. In the German evening on July 6th, 1999, he began a PK spree where he killed everyone in sight. After the event he remarked on the board that he was hunted by the Mercs, the IT, Jeppos Hand, and the DoL. Massive PKing was not very common as PKs typically killed one or two people and logged out. Mass PKing was not a banable offence at this time, but the community was very angry with his seeming betrayal of the community trust.
